ARGUMENTS!

Assalamualaikum w.b.t.

So, we meet again this week with a new topic which is ARGUMENTS. Argument is important in oral and written communication. The argument used when someone is asking for a YES or NO questions. If it is a YES, we have to give the arguments and if it is a NO, we still need to give the arguments too. Hence, we can simply say that we have to use arguments to justify the reasons or our claim about some issues. A good argument must be presented using the understandable language, a systematic, easily interpreted and understood in order to avoid another questions. For example,

Example 1

Example 2

Before going too far, what is argument? Argument is a set of statements that must be verified or we can say that argument is a form of thinking that uses a  specific statement to support other statements or simply a conclusion. An argument involves establishing a claim and then proving it with the use of logical reasoning, examples, and research. the picture below summarizes the steps in establishing an argument;

There are two type of argue which are writing arguments and verbal arguments. The writing arguments are disseminated through print and electronic media such as books, journals, articles and others while verbal arguments are presented orally, speech and logical strength. But, the verbal arguments may invites a lot of mistakes and errors of logic.

Since I had explained about the type of argue, now lets move on the attributes of the debaters who need to present the arguments. The debaters must be;

  1. Fair and balanced
  2. Open-minded
  3. Have a deep knowledge of the issue addressed
  4. Able to manipulate the opponents' mistakes
  5. Analyze the opponents or audiences background so that relevant arguments can be built
  6. Avoid fallacy
  7. Posses good communication skills
  8. Self-calm and balanced personality

I think that's all for today. Assalamualaikum w.b.t.

CRITICAL THINKING

Assalamualaikum w.b.t.

This week, we had learnt about critical thinking. What is critical thinking? Well, critical thinking is the art of analyzing and evaluating thinking with a view to improve it. We need critical thinking to uncover and check our assumptions on something or issues. Critical thinking involved a few processes-- conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating the info gathered or generated by observation, experience, reflection, reasoning or communication as a guide to action.

The picture below shows the process of critical thinking.

When there is a process for critical thinking, but what about the attributes of a critical thinker? The pictures below shows the characteristics of a critical thinker which we should implement in our life.

During the class, we were given a picture which is not scary at all and asked to create a horror/scary story based on the picture. But, all of the groups managed to make their own horror story. I think it is fun when once in a while we had to challenge our critical thinking skill to come up with that kind of scary story.

The picture used to create a scary story

Here is Mimi telling our story to the class. It's kinda scary with the dim lighting. It did created a scary environment at that time =)

I think that's all for this week. Till we meet again, assalamualaikum and goodbye =)

HOTS.

Assalamualaikum w.b.t.

Hi. We meet again this week and I'll be talking about 'HOTS'. Why am I talking about HOTS? This is because we learnt it today. 'HOT' is High Order Thinking Skills that most of us should have in order to make our studies a lot easier.

Basically, the picture above has given us the overview of what exactly 'HOTS' is. We need 'HOTS' because it is the most important 21st century skills that involved thinking, resilience, teamwork, communication, and problem solving. Thus, by having 'HOTS', we can survive better in this modern world. 'HOTS' is defined as the ability to transform the information and ideas, combining them to synthesize, generalize, and making explanation to arrive at some conclusion or interpretation so that we are able to solve the problems, gain understandings, and discover new meaning of something. Thus, 'HOTS' functions for problem solving, decision making, and creativity and innovation. We need 'HOTS' to avoid the narrow-minded thinking, hasty and rush thinking, blurriness or unclear about something, and confusion.

When talking about 'HOTS', we should know the Bloom's Taxonomy of 'HOTS'. This is what makes 'HOTS' is different from lower thinking skill.

During the class session, we were given some old newspapers and asked to generate/make something new from it. So, my group members and I decided to make lotus origami out of it that has it's own meaning that represents us as students. Here, are some of my pictures with our lotus..

This kind of activity does required us to make use of our 'HOTS' to come out with the creative idea which I think is fun and exciting in which we can make use both sides of our brains actively. Well, that's all for today and assalamualaikum w.b.t.

Perception & Logic.

Assalamualaikum w.b.t.

This morning was our third lecture of the semester. The topics that we learnt was PERCEPTION and LOGIC in thinking. Actually, perception and logic are the two stages of thinking that all of us did. So, what is perception? Well, from what I'd understand, perception is the way that we think about someone or something as the first impression towards it. This perception is not always true or false, but in a more defined meaning perception is the ability to understand or aware about something easily by using our senses. Perception is also said to be the result of perceiving and observation obtained by using our senses. In most cases, perception can be said as a belief or opinion that often held by many people and based on how things seem.

There are three types of perception-- auditory, visual, and kinesthetic-tactile in which all of it does required us to use our senses. Moreover, the perception has a few attributes which are change-able, personal, continuously, and selective. This attributes of perception were mostly influenced by contrast, background, self-esteem, focus, object arrangement, time, mind setting, and motivation that someone could see or observed. To make it easier, perception can be like this;

Now, we can move on to logic. From what I understand, logic is something that make sense, realistic and justifiable. Perception and logic are dependent to each other in which the perception collects all the information to come out with a concept and the meaning whereas logic is a set of assumptions used from the a general conclusion that generated from the perception. So, the perception and logic are so useful in finding the causes and effects of and event happening, making and arguments on something or issue, and making a conclusion about something. Logic is based on two methods-- inductive and deductive.

During this period, we did an activity related to inductive and deductive logic. We were told to generate some examples of the inductive and deductive reasoning. So. here are some of the sneaks peak of us during the activity;

Here, Eka is presenting about deductive logic.

This is a video of Mimi presenting about deductive logic.

This is our 'manuscript' =)

So, that is all happening this week and till we meet again next week.
